Enterprise Services provides a search engine utilizing the Inktomi Web Search software. A centralized index of all Hopkins web sites is available at either of the following addresses http://search.jhmi.edu or http://search.jhu.edu. The index is created by spidering the network, which means the indexing software starts from a base set of URLs and follows all links, indexing each page it encounters as it goes along. When a link is to a new site, it compares the site against a list of allowed sites for the index and only follows links if the site is allowed. Every effort has been made to add all Hopkins sites into the list of allowed sites. Since the spidering is URL based, if your site does not use a jhmi.edu or jhu.edu URL it is worth checking to make sure it is in the allowed sites list, which is available at this URL: http://nts.jhmi.edu/es/search.filters.cfm.
Sites are revisited on a dynamically rolling schedule. There are utilities for adding your site, revisiting your site, and checking the status on http://nts.jhmi.edu/es/websearching.cfm. The “Add URL” function of the search engine will also check the “Allowed URL” list mentioned above when an attempt is made to manually add a site. If your site is not linked to from any other site that the search engine visits, then you will have to manually add it using the “Add URL” utility. If the site remains unlinked from any other sites, you will have to re-add it each time the search engine is cleared and re-indexed (several times a year).
Using the <title> tag within the <head> section of each document will help the search engine more accurately index your content. Details on using <meta> tags to improve the indexing of your site can be found at: http://search.jhmi.edu/help/meta.html?la=en
Adding a search box to your site is very simple. You can search all of Hopkins’ web sites, just your web site, or give users a choice. More details and sample code snippets can be found at: http://nts.jhmi.edu/es/websearching.cfm.
It is also relatively easy to customize the look of your results page, which involves uploading a header.html and footer.html file to the search server. Contact searchadmin@jhu.edu for more details.
There are two main ways to prevent your site from being indexed: robots.txt files and robots <meta> tags.
More information about using robots.txt files and robots <meta> tags to prevent indexing is available here:
